Fire rescue personnel on Sunday recovered the body of a 47-year-old woman who was swept away amid flash flooding Saturday night in Ahualoa.

The woman was reportedly trying to cross a flooding river that was flowing across a driveway off of Kahana Road in the Ahualoa Area of Honokaa when she was swept off her feet and disappeared down the river, the Hawaii Fire Department said. The incident, reported at 10:40 p.m., occurred amid heavy rain, officials said, also noting the river bed is normally dry.

Rescue personnel made attempts to locate the woman, however, the search was suspended due to dangerous conditions. The search commenced at first light Sunday and all personnel were back in quarters shortly after noon.
